Key Takeaways:

  • A baby sleep log can help you better understand sleep patterns over time, so you can adjust your child’s routines if needed.
  • Remembering to consistently track sleep over time can be challenging for any parent.
  • Hatch Baby’s Smart Sleep Logging feature is an automatic baby sleep log that records your child’s sleep and wake-ups in the app, so you can understand trends and encourage healthy routines.

A baby's sleep changes rapidly during the first year of life, making it difficult to know what's typical from one week to the next. Keeping a sleep log can help you recognize patterns, monitor changes over time, and make more informed decisions about naps and bedtime. The challenge is that manual sleep tracking takes time and consistency, two things that can be hard to come by when you're caring for a young baby.

Now, Hatch Baby has a solution: Smart Sleep Logging. Every time you use your Hatch Baby device, the app will automatically track the sleep session — no manual tracking required. Keep reading to learn more about the new Hatch Baby Smart Sleep Logging feature, and how it can help you create routines that support more sleep for everyone in your home.

What is Baby Sleep Tracking, and How Can It Help?

Tracking your baby's sleep can help you spot patterns in naps, bedtime, and overnight sleep. Over time, these insights can make it easier to recognize what schedule works best for your child, notice changes in their sleep habits, and share helpful information with your pediatrician if concerns arise.

A sleep log can reveal trends that may not be obvious day to day, such as how wake windows affect naps, whether bedtime timing influences overnight sleep, or how sleep changes during developmental milestones. Looking at several days or weeks of data often provides a clearer picture than focusing on a single day.

With automatic sleep tracking in the Hatch Sleep app, you don’t have to remember to manually track every detail of your child’s sleep (let’s be honest, you have enough going on). Plus, if you reach out for support from our Hatch Sleep Consultants, they’ll already have the information they need to offer the best possible suggestions for whatever you’re struggling with. That means no back-and-forth context needed, and your most pressing baby sleep questions answered ASAP.

How Hatch Baby Smart Sleep Tracking Works

Smart Sleep Logging logs your child’s sleep based on when your Hatch Baby device is turned on and off. If you enable the feature, the app will use your device’s activity to generate sleep log entries for you automatically.

A few things to note:

  • Very short sleep sessions (under 10 minutes) are filtered out automatically.
  • You can edit, delete, or add entries anytime, and your edits won’t be overwritten
  • Because it’s based on device usage (not a sensor), the logs are a starting point rather than a guaranteed accurate record. If something looks off, you can always adjust it manually.

When you open the Hatch Baby app, you’ll automatically be prompted to enable the feature. Simply select “Enable Smart Sleep Logging.” That’s it!If you have any questions or need assistance setting up sleep logging, send us a chat in the Sleep Help tab of the Hatch Sleep app or visit hatch.help.co.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can a sleep log help establish a bedtime routine?

A sleep log can show when your baby naturally starts getting sleepy, how long they stay awake between naps, and whether certain bedtime routines are associated with better sleep. These patterns can help you build a more consistent schedule that aligns with your baby's needs.

Can a sleep log help when talking to my pediatrician?

It can. Bringing a record of your baby's typical sleep schedule, nap lengths, and overnight sleep can give your pediatrician useful context if you have questions about your baby's sleep, feeding, or overall development. While a sleep log isn't a medical diagnostic tool, it can support more informed conversations.

What's the difference between sleep tracking and sleep monitoring?

Sleep tracking focuses on recording when your baby sleeps and wakes to help identify patterns and routines. Sleep monitoring generally refers to technology that continuously measures or observes aspects of sleep such as movement, breathing, or heart rate using sensors or other hardware. The two serve different purposes, and not all sleep tracking tools include sleep monitoring.
