Goodnight, Phone: How This Hatch Feature Can Help You Get Better Zzzs
We’ve all had those nights. You grab your phone to check a notification or respond to a text, and the next thing you know, it’s waaay past your bedtime — but you feel wired instead of tired. Whether it’s puppy TikToks or your inbox keeping you hooked, scrolling before bed can be a major sleep disruptor. But ditching your phone at night? That’s easier said than done.
At Hatch, we’re all about supporting healthy sleep habits — including helping you break up with PM scrolling. Hatch Restore’s phone-free features and controls make it easy to unwind without distractions and blue light.
To help you make screen-free nights a habit, we created Goodnight, Phone — a Restore 3 feature available to Hatch+ subscribers with iOS — as a gentle reminder to put your phone away and begin your bedtime routine. Think of it as a nightly commitment to set aside time to unwind before bed and prioritize sleep, so you can take on whatever the day may have in store.
Why Goodnight, Phone?
Your phone isn’t just a distraction from your bedtime — it can actually interfere with your body’s ability to wind down and get restorative rest. Your body’s internal clock relies on light as a cue to determine what time it is. Light from your phone can trick your body into thinking it’s daytime, impacting the release of melatonin (the hormone that helps you get sleepy at bedtime).
Content on your phone can also make it hard for your mind to settle down — and depending on what you’re watching or reading on your device, you may even notice you feel anxious when it’s time to get Zzzs.
That’s why experts recommend limiting screen time before bed as a key element of sleep hygiene. Goodnight, Phone makes it easy to swap your phone for more relaxing activities that support deeper rest — so you can meet your sleep goals, one night at a time.
Set your phone’s bedtime
Saying “goodnight” to your phone with Restore is simple. The first step: Choose when you want to put your phone down each night — it’s your gentle nudge to fewer scrolls and deeper sleep. In the Hatch app, navigate to the “For You” tab, and you’ll be prompted to choose a phone bedtime.
Setting your phone’s bedtime can also help you stick with a bedtime routine. Consistency is one of the best ways to support your body’s internal clock (and in turn, fall asleep faster and get rest that actually restores you).
Track your wins
Each night you stop using your phone before bed counts toward your cumulative nights of success, and you can see your count increase over time in the app (including a weekly tracker that shows how many nights you’ve been successful that week). Consistency taps into your brain’s reward system, making your phone bedtime feel satisfying in the moment. The longer you stick with it, the more motivated you’ll be to keep it going, which helps turn your goal into a lasting habit.
Get gentle reminders
Let us help you so your phone doesn’t miss its bedtime — and so you don’t, either. We’ll remind you 30 minutes before your phone bedtime with a visual countdown on your phone screen, so you can finish up what you’re doing. If you scroll for more than 5 minutes after your set bedtime, Hatch sends you a nudge to put your phone down and start unwinding.
Once you put your phone to bed, you can use Restore's expansive library of light and audio content to help prepare your mind and body for the restful sleep you deserve — all without your phone.
