Software Engineer

We’re looking for a software engineer to join our team. There’s so much we want to build and loads we can improve on, and we’re on the hunt for a full-stack engineer who’s agile and curious enough to jump into all the things we’re working on. You’ll be working with John (our director of engineering), Anastasia (our co-founder), and Noah and Dale (our brilliant engineers).

Nice to meet you, we’re Hatch

We're building an interactive alternative to traditional e-commerce — a place where every product you see is just a starting point for what it could become. With customization at our core, we enable buyers to redesign every product on our site — from jewelry to Scrabble boards — and have it made-to-order just for them by artisans from around the world. Think of us as a site with Fab-type products overlaid with a Nike-ID layer of technology on top.

Just a year in, we've been selected as of one of the National Retail Federation's most innovative companies and one of TimeOut's best new shopping sites of 2013. We’re backed by folks like 500 startups and Saatchi and Saatchi’s Investment Fund and our advisors include the Head of Data Science for Airbnb and the former COO of Fab.

We're a small team based in Flatiron that gets tons done (7 people and counting). We work hard, debate a lot, and laugh incessantly. We’re looking for someone who likes to work with a closely knit team. Your main job will be coding, but you might also be asked to help with design and product development.

We’re also looking for someone who likes to learn new things and stretch themselves. We know lots of places say that, so what do we mean? If you think that a new piece of tech would help us work better, we’d like to know. We recently started using AngularJS — AKA Superheroic JavaScript MVW Framework — for that reason.

What we’re looking for:

  • You’ve got to have a good handle on how the web works. HTML, CSS, Ajax, Jquery.... and on and on. More is not better but you should generally know what they are.
  • You should understand relational databases. We don’t expect you to know how to write a correlated subquery but you should know how to model something.
  • Knowledge of Ruby on Rails is helpful but not required. Knowledge of programming is required.
  • We work on retina Macbook Pros with 27-inch thunderbolt displays, so ideally you’d like working on Mac hardware. If you have another preference, we’re open to it, but we’d expect to hear some good reasons that back up your choice.

By the way, our current tech stack looks like this:

  • Ruby on Rails
  • AngularJS
  • PostgreSQL
  • Git

Salary, stock, and health insurance (in addition to free Friday lunches and great office banter) are just some of the perks of joining the Hatch team.

If you think we can get along, we’d love to hear from you. Ping your resume and a brief paragraph about who you are to or by pressing the Apply button below.
